Every time a major championship rolls around in golf betting, we have to make the most of it, as we can wager on much more than who will win. Let’s have a look at some of the more intriguing prop bets for the Masters this week (with picks, of course).

Who will be the leader after round one?

Phil Mickelson: +1015
Tiger Woods: +1415
Nick Watney: +1850
Lee Westwood: +2050
Martin Kaymer: +2550
Dustin Johnson: +3050
Luke Donald: +3050
Steve Stricker: +3050

A guy like Nick Watney or Luke Donald really appeals to me here. Both are playing very well and with extreme confidence right now. Whether or not nerves kick in on the weekend won’t be relevant on Thursday. I like Watney, who has been the Tour’s best player so far this year, to fly out of the gate.

Pick: Watney +1850

Will there be a playoff to decide the winner?

Yes: +260
No: -320

Parity in golf is absolutely on the rise. There are dozens and dozens of golfers with legitimate chances to win every week. That means more and more tourneys come down to the wire – like the most recent major, the 2010 PGA Championship. I like the underdog pick for a playoff here.

Pick: Yes +260

What will be the nationality of the winner?

American: -145
European: +185
Rest of World: +515

Europeans have won two of the last four major championships. Five of the top six ranked golfers in the world are European. The only reason why the Americans are favored is that there are more of them in the field. I still like the odds on a European. I actually picked Steve Stricker to win but I prefer to gamble on Europe for this prop.

Pick: European +185

The winning tournament score will be:

274 and under: +145
275-276: +505
277-278: +515
279-280: +550
281-282: +615
283 and over: +350

It’s fairly safe to assume no one goes over 283 this year;; only one of the last 20 Masters champs shot higher than 281. However, by Augusta standards, the course could play difficult this year. It’s consistently tough on putting and the conditions should be dry, making the greens fast. I’d thus expect something in the 279 or 280 range this year.

Pick: 279-280 +550

The lowest round will be:

Over 65.5: +140
Under 65.5: -170

Nick Price and Greg Norman share the Masters course record at 63. And it seems like someone shoots a wildly low round every year at every major, even if it’s an out-of-contention guy who simply betters his paycheque on Sunday. So I’d expect someone to shoot a 65 or lower.

Pick: Under 65.5 -170
